Webinar: Exposing The Harms of Federal Private School Vouchers

The harmful One Big Beautiful Bill Act, signed into law in July 2025, creates the first-ever federal private school voucher scheme for states. This private school voucher scheme will harm Black, Brown, working- and middle-class communities and their schools. Your governor can choose to side with the Trump-Vance agenda for the wealthy and opt-in to this harmful scheme, or choose to invest in high quality public schools for ALL and opt-out.

Please join the Southern Education Foundation, Advancement Project, Southern Poverty Law Center, and Legal Defense Fund on May 11 at 1 p.m. CT for a timely discussion overviewing the disturbing past and present of private school vouchers and why the federal private school voucher will be harmful to schools in your state. Co-hosted by the Southern Education Foundation, Advancement Project, Southern Poverty Law Center, and Legal Defense Fund, we will break down the discriminatory history of private school voucher programs post-Brown v. Board and how current private school voucher programs deny equal opportunity to students of color. We will also share advocacy tools including a template letter to send to your governor to urge them not to opt-in to this racist and destructive program.

The webinar will feature:

  • Fred Jones, Senior Director of Public Policy and Advocacy at Southern Education Foundation
  • Darian Burns, Legislative and Public Policy Analyst at Southern Education Foundation
  • Laura Petty, Staff Attorney at Advancement Project
  • Theresa Lau, Senior Policy Counsel at Southern Poverty Law Center
  • Ashley Harrington, Senior Policy Counsel at LDF
  • Allen Liu, Policy Counsel at LDF
